The Animal
Mohair is devired from Arabic (mukhayyar, a goat's hair cloth).The goat in question, the angora is thought to have originated in Tibet.Turkey was the centre of mohair textile production before the goat was introduced to  Southern Africa and the USA during the 19th century. Angora goats are shorn twice a year and yield from 3 to 5kg of mohair.

The Producers
Production is concentrated in the  Eastern Cape region of South Afica, where the Angora goat population is estimated at 850,000. Another major producer is the US state of Texas, with a herd of 200 000 goats.
